The Medical Nutrition International Industry (MNI) is the international trade association of companies providing products and services that support to optimize patient outcome through the appropriate use of specialised nutritional support, including enteral and parenteral nutrition. Nestlé Health Science is a key member of MNI.
The goals of MNI is to build an environment, which promotes the transition of clinical nutrition research into standard practice, and work with regulatory authorities and scientific bodies to shape a regulatory and reimbursement framework which supports the health needs of patients throughout the world.
Malnutrition, specifically under-nutrition which is typically associated with disease, continues to impair the lives of thousands of people around the globe. In response to this issue, the Medical Nutrition International Industry (MNI) aims to increase awareness about malnutrition. Evidence has shown that malnutrition is a health concern in various settings and that Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONS) can play a positive role in the fight against it.
1) New systematic reviews (2015) show that managing malnutrition with oral nutritional supplements (ONS) benefits the whole healthcare system
These comprehensive reviews have shown that managing malnutrition with ONS can produce an average cost saving of around 10% compared to standard care across a broad range of patient groups. Also, the meta-analyses in hospitalized patients show that ONS use is associated with fewer deaths, a reduction in complications and shorter length of hospital stays.
The key findings have been summarized:
2) Fight against malnutrition (2012 publications)
Malnutrition, specifically under-nutrition which is typically associated with disease, continues to impair the lives of thousands of people around the globe. The consequences of malnutrition have detrimental effects on both individuals and society. Malnutrition leads to increased healthcare resource use. The costs associated with malnutrition can amount to a staggering €170 billion in Europe alone.
MNI’s key objective is to further the “Fight Against Malnutrition” through the translation of nutrition research into standard clinical practice. Some of the milestones MNI strives to reach include increased awareness about the relevance of malnutrition, the implementation of routine screening in various settings, and the implementation of standards for nutritional care. MNI makes every effort to support collaborations between healthcare professionals, dedicated societies, and regulatory authorities with the ultimate aim of improving the nutritional care and health of people in a variety of settings.
MNI has compiled several publications giving the latest information relating to the important role that Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONS) play in tackling malnutrition.
Read Summary Booklet (Oral Nutritional Supplements to tackle malnutrition, 16 pages): It provides an accessible, practical and condensed compilation of the research presented in the full dossier, 273 pages). The booklet also highlights key facts and figures relating to the implications of malnutrition, and showcases best practice examples and statements from independent experts.
